Chapter 23. Kanye West: The Rebel. The Villain. The Genius. The Misunderstood.
Share
There are some people who walk into a room and politely wait to be noticed.
Then there’s Kanye West.
Love him. Hate him. Argue with him. Question him. Admire him. Shake your head at him.
Or, if you’re anything like us at Villainz N That… probably do all of the above before lunchtime.
Kanye has spent much of his career being the rebel, the villain, the genius, the thought-provoker and, at times, the misunderstood one.
And honestly?
That’s exactly why we find him fascinating.
The man who refused to stay in his lane
Kanye was never particularly interested in being told what he should be.
He wasn’t just happy being a rapper. He wanted to produce. Then design. Then build brands. Then change fashion. Then change the way people thought about celebrity, creativity and ownership.
The YEEZY story alone is pretty wild. His adidas partnership eventually became one of the biggest collaborations between a sportswear brand and a non-athlete, with the Yeezy Boost 750 and 350 becoming huge cultural moments.
That’s rebel behaviour.
Not necessarily “let’s smash everything up” rebel behaviour.
More:
“Why are we doing it this way?”
“Who said I couldn’t?”
“What happens if I try something completely different?”
And sometimes…
“Oh dear, Kanye has said it again.”
😂
But genius and controversy can exist in the same person
Here’s where it gets uncomfortable.
At Villainz N That, we’re not going to pretend we agree with everything Kanye has said or done. We don’t.
Some of his behaviour and comments have been genuinely offensive and harmful. That’s not something we’re interested in dressing up as “being a rebel”.
There’s a difference between challenging the world and hurting people.
And that’s important.
Because understanding someone doesn’t mean agreeing with them.
You can understand where somebody’s frustration, ambition, creativity or anger comes from without signing your name underneath everything they say.
In fact, that’s probably the whole point.
The misunderstood bit
Kanye has always seemed obsessed with the idea of being understood.
Maybe that’s why people connect with him.
Because haven’t we all, at some point, felt like people have decided who we are without actually bothering to ask?
The quiet person gets labelled rude.
The confident person gets labelled arrogant.
The person who dresses differently gets labelled weird.
The person who refuses to follow the crowd gets labelled difficult.
And the person who keeps shouting their ideas into the world?
Well…
Sometimes they get labelled the villain.
Sound familiar?
That’s where Kanye and Villainz N That cross paths.
We like villains
Our whole thing isn’t about pretending villains are always right.
They’re not.
It’s about questioning who gets to decide who the villain is.
Kanye has certainly given people plenty of reasons to question him. But he’s also challenged conventions, created things people said couldn’t be created and pushed himself into spaces where he wasn’t necessarily welcomed.
That’s rebellion.
And rebellion is rarely tidy.
It’s messy.
It’s uncomfortable.
It’s occasionally brilliant.
And sometimes it makes everyone in the room collectively whisper:
“Mate… maybe don’t post that.”
😂
You don’t have to agree to understand
That’s probably the biggest lesson we take from Kanye.
You don’t have to agree with someone to understand them.
You don’t have to like everything somebody represents to recognise their influence.
And you don’t have to become somebody else just because the world has decided what you should be.
That’s the spirit behind Villainz N That.
We’re interested in the outsiders.
The rebels.
The misfits.
The people who’ve been misunderstood.
The people who’ve been told they’re too much, too different, too loud, too weird or simply not what we’re looking for.
Because sometimes being different isn’t the problem.
Sometimes being different is the entire point.
And yes… we know you want the Yeezys 👀
Let’s be honest.
If you came here looking for Kanye, there’s a reasonable chance your brain has already gone:
“Yeah yeah, interesting… but where are the shoes?”
😂
YEEZY and adidas created some genuinely iconic footwear and fashion moments, although that partnership ultimately ended in 2022.
So yes, we can point you in the direction of the Yeezys.
But if you’re looking for something with a little more Villainz energy…

Because you don’t need to be Kanye.
You don’t need to be anybody else.
Be misunderstood. Be different. Be unapologetically you.
Just maybe think twice before posting that controversial tweet.
We’ve learned something from Kanye. 😂
